Our sense of self, our self esteem is important because it gives each of us the conﬁdence to deal with the challenges in our individual lives. Our current sense of self is made up of internal and external factors which can through completing tasks, appreciation, praise,reframing and putting ‘things’ into context be improved. Balancing expectations with a focus on others and compassion can make individuals less vulnerable to life’s disappointments.
Everything we do involves a conscious or unconscious decisions. Having an effective decision making strategy, which can be varied according to the context can improve an individual’s life experience. Learning when and how to use effectively mind, heart and gut(intuitive-knowing) decision making ensures that decisions are congruent for any individual. That when a mental decision is made, that there is also the passion and the action to carry it through.
Actors, musicians, dancers, public speakers can all suffer from anxiety about performance. In all cases their anxiety is made up of several components:
- Do I know what I am supposed to?
- Have I practised enough?
- Do I have the conﬁdence – am I worried that I can or about what others will think?
Coaching can help with the skills & strategies required for study, revision and delivering the final performance. It’s up to the individual to practice enough but sometimes they may need help with motivation or to manage panic attacks or fears over stage fright. Managing the mental chatter to focus on the best of the work already done or situation rather on those bits that are still a worry is often necessary and quite effective. Having put themselves in a better state the more challenging preparation work or final performance can be completed to the best of an individuals ability.
A drop in energy after the build up to a performance is common but for some this drop and low can be hard to get out of. Synthesis Learning has strategies to help processing the feelings of grief and loneliness often associated with the end of a role. Even when an individual has a strong personal social network to fall back on the sudden loss of once daily interactions with peers or simply the act of walking off stage can still cause a surprise low. Coupled together with a gap in someone’s previously busy schedule and someone can begin to feel very lost and benefit with strategies to cope with this major change.
Due to hormonal changes and those ﬁnding out who they are amongst their peers and in the wider world teenagers experience a roller coaster of emotions. With coaching it is possible to ﬁnd strategies for each individual to cope with subtle but unsettling emotions and strong to overwhelming emotions. The commonest mental health issue amongst teenagers is a combination of anxiety and depression. Learning strategies to cope and then to develop resilience are a beneﬁt for life.
Exams & Learning
There is an increasing pressure to succeed in exams in todays society. Optimising an individuals learning strategies appropriate for the a particular course level (GCSE, A Level) can make a big difference, and Synthesis learning uses methods proved scientiﬁcally to be effective.

I was teaching a top set and one female student was achieving 20-30% lower than the rest of the class in a past exam paper, two weeks before the end of the course. She was a bright girl who had written an orchestral piece at 13. It took me 10 minutes to elicit that her preferred learning style was heavily visual and that it was the non-sensory language that was causing the problem. I devised a strategy which made the difference. The result was that she achieved one grade higher than predicted in six of her GCSEs.
A frequent problem is students who have unconsciously poor strategies to cope with exams.
