Key Timeframes for US CMA Exam Attempts
The US CMA exams are conducted three times a year—
-
- January/February
- May/June
- September/October
It’s essential to start preparing at least five months before your target exam date. For example, if you’re planning for the January/February window, you should ideally begin in August. Once you’ve decided on your exam window, start focusing on gathering the necessary documents and planning your application process well in advance.
Step 1: Register on the IMA Website
After choosing your exam window, the next step is to visit the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) website. Here, you’ll need to:
Pay the Entrance Fee:
This fee allows you to enter the CMA program.
Pay the Membership Fee:
IMA membership is mandatory for CMA candidates, so make sure you select the right category (student, professional, or academic).
Pay the Exam Fee:
The exam fee can be paid separately for each part of the CMA exam. It’s advisable to register for one exam at a time to manage your study and financial plans effectively.

Step 2: Booking Your Exam Slot
Once you’ve registered and paid the fees, you’ll receive an email from Prometric, the official testing center for US CMA exams. This email will include your Appointment Letter, which is essentially your hall ticket for the exam. With this letter, you can proceed to book your exam slot on the Prometric website.
On the Prometric website, you will see the available dates and time slots for your chosen exam window. It’s always a good idea to book your slot at least 30-45 days in advance. For example, if you plan to take the exam on January 28th, try booking it by mid-December to secure your preferred time.
Pro Tip:
Choose the Right Time Slot
Prometric typically offers two-time slots for the exam: 8 AM and 12 PM. If you’re prone to anxiety or tend to sleep late, we recommend opting for the 12 PM slot. This will give you enough time to relax in the morning and approach the exam with a fresh mind.
Step 3: Documents to Carry on Exam Day
On the day of your CMA exam, there are certain documents you must carry to the test center. Here’s a checklist to ensure you’re fully prepared:
Government-Approved Identification:
This could be your passport, Aadhaar card, or driver’s license. Make sure you carry both primary and secondary forms of ID as per Prometric’s requirements.
Appointment Letter:
This is sent to your email by Prometric after booking your slot. You can carry a printed copy or display it on your mobile device.
Additional Items:
Although food and water are provided at most test centers, it’s advisable to bring a snack, such as an energy bar, and a bottle of water to keep you refreshed during the exam. You can step out to eat, but remember that the exam timer won’t stop while you’re away.

Step 4: What to Expect at the Exam Center
Make sure you arrive at least 30-40 minutes before your exam time to avoid any last-minute rush. Upon arrival, the exam center will verify your identification and Appointment Letter before allowing you to enter. During the exam, technical issues like timer glitches can occasionally occur. If this happens, raise your hand and wait for a moderator to assist you.
For comfort, consider carrying a light sweater. Test centers can sometimes be overly air-conditioned, which may become uncomfortable if you’re not prepared for the cold environment.
Additional Items to Bring:
Calculator:
It’s highly recommended to bring two calculators just in case the battery dies or one malfunctions during the exam. There’s no limit to how many calculators you can carry into the exam hall.
Self-confidence:
The exam can be stressful, but if you’ve prepared thoroughly for five to six months, you should be confident in your ability to pass.
Step 5: After the Exam
Results are typically released around 42 days after your exam date. Once you pass both parts of the CMA exam, the next step is to submit your work experience to the IMA if you have less than two years of experience. If you already have the required experience, you can immediately apply for your CMA certification through the IMA website.
Step 6: US CMA Certification Documents
To obtain your CMA certification, you’ll need to fill out a form on the IMA website, providing details about your work experience. You’ll also need to list your previous employer and manager’s details, which may be verified by the IMA. After submitting this form, it could take up to three to four months to receive your certification via courier.
When your certification arrives, you’ll receive two items:
- Â A formal certificate from the IMA, signed by the president or a senior official.
- Â A wallet-sized card version of your certification, which you can carry and show as proof of your CMA status.
